YD's Diary #19 The Secret to Fixing Flaws as a Senior Professional

Image
As the old saying goes, "A habit formed at age three lasts until age eighty" (세 살 버릇 여든 간다), and the same seems to be true in professional life. Initial habits in the workplace significantly influence one's attitude and performance throughout their career. I was fortunate enough to meet many junior colleagues early in my professional journey, and observing their diverse paths of growth over time led me to discover a common characteristic. Borrowing from my own ' New Hire Nature Theory ,' I believe new employees embody all three philosophical concepts: Goodness of Human Nature , Evil of Human Nature , and Neutrality of Human Nature . Goodness of Human Nature (Approx. 15%): Those who act kindly in any situation. Evil of Human Nature (Approx. 5%): Those who display poor behavior even in the best environments. Neutrality of Human Nature (The Majority, 70-80%): Those who join the company with a neutral disposition, neither inherently good nor evil. However, a key fa...

YD's Diary #18 Making ESG Sustainable: Separating Mandatory Issues from Recommendations

Image
Over the past two years in my MBA program, I spent a lot of time building my own understanding of ESG. I still have much to learn, but compared to before my MBA, I definitely understand ESG much better now. While studying ESG, I often wondered, "Can ESG itself be sustainable?" Today, I want to share my thoughts about this. This article comes from only two years of thinking, so please read it kindly as a beginner's challenge. [Isn't ESG Too Broad?] When people first learn about ESG, everyone feels differently. But I think everyone agrees that it's hard to define clearly. Even now, ESG means different things to different people. Just look at the "S" (Social) part. The word "social" has a dictionary meaning, but it doesn't give us one clear concept. When we add business management, profits, strategy, and decision-making, problems start appearing from the very beginning. When you look at many ESG materials, the "S" include...

YD's Diary #17 New Report Philosophy : TRUE

Image
After joining the company, I spent 10 years diligently executing projects and delivering results I could be proud of—without regrets. Through that journey, I came to define four core personal values: Respecting, Listening, Planning, and Assuring. I combined these principles into a personal work philosophy, which I expressed through the following statement: "LISTEN closely with RESPECT, and PLAN Exhaustively—then you are going to ASSURE project success." By my 15th year, while working in PMO on Risk Management and reporting to executives, I realized the need for a new philosophy. After a year of reflection and experience, I identified three key elements essential for executive-level reporting: Transparency, Exhaustiveness, and Assurance. To express this philosophy—and as someone who enjoys tea time—I embodied these values in my work under the concept of TEA . Now, another decade has passed. With broader experience across various roles, I have found searching for ...

YD's Diary #16 Guestology? lol , Projectology!

For my birthday, company's boss let me choose a book as a gift. Since I ’ ve been using AI more and more in my work, I started wondering — what kind of philosophy and skills do I need to thrive in this new environment? That curiosity led me to pick up The Extinction of Experience .   Using AI has expanded the way I think. The scope of ideas I can explore has grown, and the quality of my output has noticeably improved. Even in areas where human experience used to be irreplaceable, AI has become a powerful ally. So when I saw the title The Extinction of Experience , I was intrigued — what could that possibly mean? Turns out, it ’ s a pretty intense philosophy book. Every page feels like it contains a full-blown philosophical concept. In the past, I probably wouldn ’ t have dared to read something like this — or I would ’ ve skimmed through it without really understanding. But now, with AI by my side, I can actually grasp the ideas and engage with the content.   ...

YD's Diary #15 What I Would Do First If I Became a CSO

Image
If you became a sustainability leader, what would you do first? After thinking it through, I came up with three clear and useful actions that I’d like to share. Step 1: All Employees to Read the Company’s Sustainability Report with guide from company Reading the company’s Sustainability Report (or ESG Report) was more meaningful than I expected. As an employee, it’s easy to get caught up in daily work and not really know what the company is doing overall. Especially normal people's job is usually small part, it’s hard to see the full picture. We work so hard every day that we rarely stop to look back. But this report shows how everything fits together. When I read it a long time ago, I thought, “Wow, there’s a lot of info here.” But that's all. And when I read it again and understood why it was written, it felt totally different.   The report helped me see where the company is heading and what the top leaders are thinking. If people read it even once carefully, it becomes much ...

YD's Diary #14 A New Framework for Sustainable Urban Living(CURES)

Image
Until now, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) discussions have primarily focused on corporations. However, as climate change and sustainability become urgent global challenges, I think that ESG principles must extend beyond companies to include cities, households, and even individuals. Urban environments, with their dense population and infrastructure, play a crucial role in environmental impact. By introducing ESG concepts at the city unit level—apartment complexes, commercial buildings, and private homes—I think that we could pave the way for a more sustainable, net-zero world. (Keyword : GRI, ESG, Net-Zero, City, Apartment Maintenance Bill of Korea) [Imagination for ESG] Environmental The contribution of homes and commercial buildings to carbon emissions is significant in city. In Korea, most households already have digitalized data in monthly maintainance bills for electricity, water, waste, and shared facilities, meaning the infrastructure for rating and ranking energy ef...

YD's Diary #13 New fairies ( Losta and Twisty )

Image
I used to think that all fairies in the world were already set and that no more could be added, but after watching Disney’s Jack Frost, I realized that new ones could still be introduced. Then today, while looking for my eyeglass cleaning cloth, I thought of a character that could be added or recommended. Before I forget, I’m writing it down here.  Every time I buy glasses, I always receive an extra cleaning cloth. When I lose one, I just go and get another, and recently, I even ordered a pack of five. But where do all these cleaning cloths keep disappearing? There must be a fairy that hides my belongings! Also there’s always a fairy that tangles my earphone cords whenever I put them in my pocket or bag. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Disney, Please add  "New fairies" Name:  Losta or Sneakle A small fairy that hides small objects like eyeglass cleaning cloths. Name:  Twisty or Wiry Wisp A tin...
