YD's Diary #5 in HY-ESG MBA, Important Talent for ESG team member.
What is the Important Talent for ESG team member?
‘Social Savvy(Mega-Insider)’
‘Willing for Understanding Business’
‘Digital Transformation Skills’
‘SNS Skills’
In the Human Resources Organizational Environment and Structure class, I am asked what individual capabilities are suitable for the ESG team, and I leave my thoughts. Recently, as ESG departments have been established in many corporate organizations, it appears that there are many difficulties in integrating them within the company. As mentioned in the previous article, there seems to be a situation where there is a strong backlash against ESG within the company, just as it is happening in society, as the company's core purpose and ESG philosophy clash.
Here are the skills I think ESG team members should have:
1. Social Savvy (Mega-Insider): This skill is very important as ESG coordinator will have to liaise with various departments and perform tasks related to non-financial performance. Specially, this skill will help when team need to receive the information which some team doesn't want to provide information.
2. Willing for understanding the company's business model: You need to understand how the company makes money and operates accordingly. If you just collect and organize Excel data without understanding the business, it is difficult to do in-depth work.
3. Digital Transformation Skills: Because ESG is included in sustainability management reports, many numbers need updating. Digitizing this process can also enhance your company’s digital transformation in same time.
4. SNS skills: Ultimately, what is important is how society accepts the information released through the report. If coordinator have experience posting on social media, know how it works, and are interested in social change, it would be good to have the ability to predict the impact of ESG announcements on society.
I think that the four above are important skills as ESG team members.
As I said before, ESG is not an essential element for a company's immediate survival, but I think it can definitely play an important role in whether the company will survive 30 years from now.
