YD's Diary #8 Equivalent Value of Life and Policy in ESG

When a person dies in an unexpected accident, we feel deep sorrow and commemorate them. Reflect on the emotions and mindset we have at that moment, and the value of life that we feel in that sorrow. Or think about the moment when a life was dramatically saved. How precious and valuable does that one life feel at that moment?

Conversely, consider the lives that could not be born due to various circumstances, but could be born into our everyday lives due to policy changes. I suddenly thought that their preciousness might be similar. To explain in more detail, in the past, lives that would have naturally been born are now missing the opportunity to be born due to various social circumstances, such as delaying marriage and childbirth. I thought that if we could save one of the next generations on this borderline through policy, wouldn't that be as valuable as saving a life that was barely saved after going through hardship and crisis, or saving someone who unfortunately lost their life?

Nowadays, the cost of housing delays marriage, making it difficult to have children after late marriages, or if one gives birth early, they might be able to have one more child, but due to circumstances, they end up having only one child. I thought about what it would be same like to save one of the next generation, who is on the borderline, through policy.

Today in MBA class, the news announced that the government organization will give extra points for childbirth in promotions. There are many pros and cons, but currently, the opposition seems strong. There is no need to force childbirth. However, I think the decline in birth rates in our era is a problem in many ways. Our society, which has rapidly expanded, is becoming a society that is rapidly shrinking instead of maintaining, and as a result, not only the national power decreases, but also many parts that should continue to develop the society are disappearing due to lack of manpower and production. If someone thinks this is not a problem, this discussion is meaningless, but I hope that the majority of people think this is a problem.

It takes tremendous cost and effort to have children, especially in today’s society. Generally, after graduating from school and starting a job, there is a difference in the time that families with children and families without children can invest in work, in the time they can rest, and most importantly, in the expenditure of income. This effort and sacrifice are for society, and the children who grow up like this become new employees in our society, making it sustainable. For such a society, policies that were unthinkable 10 or 20 years ago are now necessary.

I think this is a very sensitive topic with no right answer.

But I think we have to do.
